How To Prevent A ‘Heart Attack Grill’-Like Incident

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

Did you hear? Fox News reported about a man who suffered a heart attack while dining at a popular Las Vegas restaurant and the restaurant is called Heart Attack Grill.

Irony, you call it? Coincidence? Or was it a series of choices that led to an impactful wake-up call for this man? Luckily the paramedics arrived in time to help this man and reports say he is alive.

More then likely this wasn’t due to a one-time meal at a high-calorie restaurant but due to a series of choices that culminated in a traumatic and life-threatening incident.

At our clinic, Back To Health Chiropractic Centre, we teach about choices at our wellness workshops and lectures. I tell our patients that the choices you make today in life will shape your future.  And if you want to live a life of your dreams and vision, the choices you make today absolutely matter.  So you owe it to yourself to make the right choices for your health and your well-being, not just for now but for the rest of your life.

The Top 10 Reasons For Your Child To Have A Chiropractic Check-Up

Saturday, February 11th, 2012

Maple (Vaughan), Ontario – It is common for people to seek treatment from chiropractors for low back pain, neck pain, headaches or even injuries from work and car accidents.  These are conditions that are mostly seen in adults.   Since a child will not typically complain of low back pain, neck pain or headaches, the parents may never see a reason to get their child checked by a chiropractor for a well exam or a spinal / posture check-up.   However, regardless of any pain or symptom, a child may have spinal misalignments or posture displacements that could be putting strain on their nervous system.  Since the nervous system controls and co-ordinates every function of the body, it’s imperative that the nervous system remains as stress-free as possible for optimal health, optimal growth and optimal body function.

Consider this … spinal misalignments can occur at any time throughout the child’s growth, development and life.

Here are the 10 top reasons for your child to have a chiropractic check-up:

Optimal Posture Is Essential For Overall Health And Well-Being

Friday, February 10th, 2012

Have you ever looked in the mirror and noticed one shoulder may be lower then the other? Or have you ever noticed your friend’s head is way too forward? Or have you ever look at someone else and noticed they have a “hump” in the upper back? Or has someone ever told you that you slouch when you’re standing?

These are just some of the many types of postural imbalances that are common in people, adults, teens and children alike.

Postural imbalances or postural displacements can cause strain and stress on spinal bones, nerves and muscles.  This can lead aches, pain, fatigue and even a decrease in body function and health.

What is normal ideal posture? What does normal posture look like? Read on …

“Chiropractic Works! Adjusting To A Higher Quality Of Life.” – A Book Review

Friday, January 20th, 2012

“Chiropractic Works! Adjusting To A Higher Quality Of Life” is a wonderful book written by Timothy J. Feuling. Mr. Feuling is the vice president of the World Chiropractic Alliance (WCA).  This book is an enjoyable read as it gives you many real life stories of people who have had their life dramatically improved with chiropractic care.

What I really like about this book is that right from book’s introduction, Mr. Feuling says that this book is written with children wellness in mind.  He explains how children, as well as men and women of all ages, have benefited from chiropractic care and there are plenty of stories throughout the book that illustrate this.  Some stories are also written by chiropractors, but most of them are stories written by the patient.

Mr. Feuling also does a great job explaining in a very understandable way the difference between chiropractic care and allopathic medical care.  There is a neat section called “Who’s Who Under Chiropractic Care” where the author lists over 200 celebrities, entertainers and athletes that have received or have been under chiropractic care.

Heavy, Overloaded Backpacks Can Cause Back Problems In Students.

It’s “Back-To-School” time again! Back to school for children means summer is finished and homework time is starting.  Children in grade school today are getting way more homework then I ever did when I was in grade school.  More homework to take home means heavier backpacks.  The three biggest problems I have seen with backpacks today are: 1. Most of the time, they are too big for the child (which means they are not fitted properly), 2. The backpack is overloaded making it heavy and unsafe for the child to carry, and 3. There is poor distribution of backpack contents.

What does the research say about backpacks when they are too heavy?

A recent study showed that carrying backpacks heaver then 15% of the child’s body weight can change the postural angles of the child’s spine.1

Another study showed that the most prevalent symptoms amongst students related to carrying heavier backpacks were in the neck, shoulders, upper back and lower back. 2

It is very likely, then, that when children and students carry backpacks that are too heavy or overloaded, that this can lead to posture problems, tension on the spine, back pain, neck pain and shoulder pain.

Students in high school should have backpacks that are not heavier then 15% of their body weight.

Children in grade school should have backpacks that are not heavier then 10% of their body weight.

Read this previous post, “Chiropractic Advice For Backpack Safety”. You will find 10 useful tips to make backpack use safer for your child.

September is Backpack Safety Month at Back To Health Chiropractic Centre.  This means you can bring your child’s backpack into our clinic, we will weigh it for you, see if it is suitable for your child and show you and your child how to pack it and wear it safely and correctly.

Reactive or Proactive Health Choices?

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

In today’s fast paced society, sometimes it’s easy to lose track of your health and wellness goals. In some cases, some people don’t take their health seriously until something extreme occurs, like a heart attack or cancer.

To be healthy and stay healthy you must be proactive versus reactive.  If you find yourself rushing to the doctor’s office or pharmacy once a symptom or pain appears, that’s being reactive. In most cases, by the time the symptom appears, the underlying problem has already been developing.

Taking the proactive approach to your health and wellness puts you in charge and empowers you to make the right choices for your health and wellness way ahead of time.

When making those health choices, you must include these 5 fundamental pillars to great health:

  1. Keeping your spine and nervous system optimized with chiropractic care.
  2. Exercise regularly. Minimum 3 times / week.
  3. Eat wholesome, natural, nutritious foods.
  4. Manage your stress and overwhelm.
  5. Create a vision for your life along with well-rounded goals.

These 5 pillars to great health form the foundation to the wellness model taught at Back To Health Chiropractic Centre.

You can read more about each pillar through the various articles on our website.

Choose wisely today. Your health, your happiness and your quality of life depends on it.

Vision. Commitment. Choices.

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

“Vision. Commitment. Choices.” If you were to ask me, “Dr. Walter, how can I make a lasting change with my health and well-being?”, I would answer with those three words – “Vision. Commitment. Choices.” Read on …

Vision – know what you want and why?

Commitment – commit yourself to do whatever it takes to achieve your vision.

Choices – once committed, make the choices that are aligned with your life vision.

A couple a years ago I ran my first marathon in Toronto. The day before the race I went pick up my race packet at the expo and I was looking at some pictures of past marathon runners.  I was impressed to see a picture of a 90 year old man running that exact same marathon.   Yes! 90 years old and he ran a 42.2 km distance.  Imagine that.  It was thrilling to know that he accomplished it.  That’s when I said, “One day, when I’m 90 years old, I shall do the same and run a marathon.”  This is my vision.

At that instant when I made that declaration, my mind started racing.  I started asking questions like, “What do I have to start doing today to help me reach 90 years of age and be physically fit to run a marathon?”  My choices instantly became clear.  Exercise and run regularly.  Eat wholesome nutritious foods. Keep an ideal body weight.  I realized that I would have to start make choices today consistent with my vision to  accomplish that dream.  I also realized follow-through, that is commitment at every step of the way, would be essential.

Last week, I was giving recommendations for care to a patient.  I knew she had a busy schedule and that she was coming to our office from a distance away.  When I asked her, “Are you able to make the recommended 3 times per week?” She answered succinctly, “I will make it work”.  That is what I mean about commitment.  I knew in that instance that this patient was willing to do whatever it takes to get healthy and stay healthy.

Let me ask you, what is your vision and what is the ‘why’ behind your vision? Are your prepared to commit yourself and do whatever it takes?  How will you choose in the face of tempting and conflicting options?

When it comes to your health, your relationships, your family, your job, or whatever else is of value to you create a clear vision of how you want it to look.  Commit yourself to achieving it and choose in the direction of your vision.
