7 Ways To A Better Diet For You And Your Family

PinExt 7 Ways To A Better Diet For You And Your Family

Fruits 150x150 7 Ways To A Better Diet For You And Your FamilyA 2004 Statistics Canada report shows that many Canadians “do not have a balanced diet”.

There is a huge problem today with the diet and eating habits of Canadians.

The Statistics Canada report, titled “Overview Of Canadians’ Eating Habits”1, by Didier Garriguet showed that:

  • A majority of Canadians don’t get enough fruits and vegitables in their diet.
  • More then a quarter of men and women in their thirties and forties get more then 35% of their calories from fats.
  • People of all ages get more then 20% of their calories from other low nutritional valued foods (such as butter, beverages like soft drinks and coffee, foods that are sugar like syrups, jams, honey and high-fat, high-salt foods like chips).
  • A quarter of Canadians, including adults and children, eat something that comes from a fast food outlet.

The question that is important here is … “How are your eating habits?”

In the fast-paced, mass-production world we live in today, it may seem difficult to eat a balanced nutritional diet. However, that’s not true.  Eating a balanced diet is possible and we have been teaching this at our clinic for years. You too can start making healthier eating choices for yourself, your children and your family.

Here are some tips that will get you starting to eat a healthier, leaner and more nutritional meal.

5 Tips For Staying Ahead Of Holiday Season Stress

PinExt 5 Tips For Staying Ahead Of Holiday Season Stress

Whether you’re ready for it or not, the holiday season is just around the corner.  For some people, this can be a time of overwhelm and stress.

Stress Management Chiropractic Maple Vaughan 150x150 5 Tips For Staying Ahead Of Holiday Season StressHere are some practical tips that will help you cope, manage or even prevent stressful situations and the effects of stress on your well-being during this holiday season:

1. Exercise:  Go for a walk, a light run, do jumping jacks or push-ups.  Other ideas are home-based exercise programs, going to a gym, rock climbing or playing a favourite sport.  Whatever form of exercise you choose, it will certainly get you feeling better and it’s a great way to release stress.

2. Eat Good Wholesome Foods: More fruits and vegetables are a must in your diet.  They have nutrients, minerals, vitamins and antioxidants that help support your body.  Smoothies, juicing and “green” shakes are easy ways of getting more fruits and vegitables in your diet.

3. Get Complete With Any Disagreements: Relationships are a huge source of stress for many people, whether it is family, spouses, friends or co-workers.  Restoring a relationship with another person is many times just a conversation away.  Forgiveness is the key, not the blame-game.  Take time to have that overdue conversation.

4. Create Goals: This is a powerful way to take control of your life and create the life you want.  Goals give you a direction in life. You will bust through stressful situations faster when you know you are on a journey to creating the life of your dreams and vision.

5. Chiropractic Care: One of the many benefits of chiropractic care is a better ability to handle stress.  Stress activates the nervous system, gets you in a flight or fight response and increases stress hormones (cortisol and epinephrine). On an ongoing bases, this can be damaging to your body.  Chiropractic helps restore balance and harmony to the nervous system. If you are under chiropractic care, keep up your check-ups and adjustments.  If you are not under chiropractic care, this is a perfect time of year to get a chiropractic check-up.

Do a self-inventory.  How is stress affecting you right now? Where are the sources of stress? How can you apply these tips to make your life and your holiday season stress-free?

Please leave a comment.

Backpack Safety For School Children: What Parents Need To Know.

PinExt Backpack Safety For School Children: What Parents Need To Know.

Backpack Safety Tips From Back To Health Chiropractic Centre In Maple, Vaughan.

Children Backpack Safety Chiropractic Maple Vaughan Backpack Safety For School Children: What Parents Need To Know.Maple, ON - Yes, it’s back-to-school time, which makes for a perfect time to talk about backpack safety for kids. Years back when I was in grade school, I don’t recall carrying many books home and certainly never had on overloaded backpack. Today, it seems that backpacks are stuffed with huge binders, textbooks and many other bulky items such as shoes, lunches, pencil cases and electronic devices.

By the time you finish reading this article, you will know what is the impact of your child’s health due to heavy, overloaded backpacks.  You will also be given some key tips to making backpack use more safe for your child so strain and prolonged injury can be prevented.  First, let me put backpack weight in perspective when it comes to carrying backpacks.

One day, a child with a backpack came into the chiropractic office. The child weighed about 60 pounds and was carrying a backpack that weighed about 20 pounds.  When the father was told by the chiropractor that his son’s backpack was way too heavy for his child, the father responded, “But it’s only 20 pounds.”

Now, the father was a 180 pound man, so 20 pounds seemed relatively light to him.  When the father was told, “That 20 pounds for your son  is one third (33%) of his body weight. That would be like you carrying a 60 pound backpack on your back. How would you like to carry 60 pounds on your back?” The father’s answer was obvious, “No way!”.

Backpack Safety Awareness Week At Back To Health Chiropractic Centre September 10-14, 2012

Sometimes we lose perspective on a situation and seems like it’s not big deal.  But when you begin to see the big picture, you will see that it is a big deal.  Heavy backpacks for children can be detrimental, can cause postural distortions and even onset of symptoms.

One study showed that when backpacks weigh 15% or more of the the child’s body weight, it will cause compensating postural changes, such as shifting the head forward.  Even more, at 15% and 20% of the child’s body weight, a backpack will begin to cause discomfort after walking, primarily in the neck region.1

Over time, the continued use of heavy, overloaded backpacks can cause serious postural problems in children even before they get into highschool and college, when the backpacks become even more heavy.

Neck Pain – Can Chiropractic Really Help?

PinExt Neck Pain – Can Chiropractic Really Help?

Neck Pain Relief Treatment 200x300 Neck Pain – Can Chiropractic Really Help?Neck pain is a very common problem affecting up to 70% of the adult population at some point in life.  Though there are specific causes of neck pain such as arising from a sports injury, a car accident or “sleeping crooked,” the vast majority of the time, no direct cause can be identified and thus the term nonspecific is applied.

There are many symptoms associated with patients complaining of neck pain and many of these symptoms can be confused with other conditions.

Wouldn’t it be nice to know what neck related symptoms are most likely to respond to chiropractic manipulation before the treatment has started?  This issue has been investigated with very favorable results!

The ability to predict a favorable response to treatment has been termed, “clinical prediction rules” which in general, are usually made up of combinations of things the patient says and findings from exams. In a large study, data from about 20,000 patients receiving about 29,000 treatments, was collected and analyzed to find out what complaints responded well to chiropractic treatment.  The results showed that the presence of any 4 of these 7 presenting complaints predicted an immediate improvement in 70-95% of the patients: (more…)

How To Prevent A ‘Heart Attack Grill’-Like Incident

PinExt How To Prevent A Heart Attack Grill Like Incident

Did you hear? Fox News reported about a man who suffered a heart attack while dining at a popular Las Vegas restaurant and the restaurant is called Heart Attack Grill.

Irony, you call it? Coincidence? Or was it a series of choices that led to an impactful wake-up call for this man? Luckily the paramedics arrived in time to help this man and reports say he is alive.

More then likely this wasn’t due to a one-time meal at a high-calorie restaurant but due to a series of choices that culminated in a traumatic and life-threatening incident.

At our clinic, Back To Health Chiropractic Centre, we teach about choices at our wellness workshops and lectures. I tell our patients that the choices you make today in life will shape your future.  And if you want to live a life of your dreams and vision, the choices you make today absolutely matter.  So you owe it to yourself to make the right choices for your health and your well-being, not just for now but for the rest of your life.
