Back in the day when I was in grade school (we ‘re talking about the 80′s) kids didn’t carry or use backpacks. It wasn’t the norm as it is today and so it didn’t pose a common risk to the backs and spines of school-aged children. The most we carried to school was a lunch box and one or two books. Today, I see children with backpacks that are filled to the max and super heavy for their petite body size.

Here are 10 essential backpack safety awareness tips that every parent should know:

  1. Avoid choosing a backpack for the fashionable look. Backpacks are needed for their functionalily and not for their looks. Choose a good backpack for your child that has evenly distributed compartments, a padded back side and padded shoulder straps.
  2. The backpack size should be proportional to your child body size. A common mistake I see is that the child is carrying a backpack that is too big for them. The danger is that the backpack gets overloaded and heavy.
  3. The weight of the backpack should be 10% of the child body weight. So, an 60 lb child should be carrying a backpack that is 6 lbs. A 60 lb child should NOT be carrying a backpack that is 15 lbs for example. To an adult that may not seem too heavy, but it represents 25% of the child’s body weight (in this example). Imagine an adult with a body weight of 180 lbs carrying a weight on their back that is 25% of their body weigth. That eqauls 45 lbs of weight. I don’t think you would find that appealing nor comforting. The same goes for a child. In fact, a heavy backpack places a tremendous amount of load on the child’s spine which can lead to strains.
  4. All heavy books (like text books) should be stored in the backside of the backpack, closest to the child’s back. Lighter books and items should be stored in the front of the backpack. This allows the heavier items to be closer to the child’s center of mass when standing and walking thereby minimizing strain on their back and neck.
  5. Use the side pockets and compartments evenly. These compartments should be used to store smaller items like water bottles, pencil cases etc.
  6. Teach your child to wear BOTH shoulder straps. This gets the weight of the backpack evenly distributed throughout the child’s body and prevents overloading to one side of the shoulder.
  7. The backpack should never hang low on the child’s back. This will cause slouching and a poor posture to develop. Show your child how to tighten the backpack so it rests right up on the childs back by tugging on the pull straps located on the shoulder straps.
  8. Leave non-essential items at home, like handheld gaming devices etc. Items that are not essential for schooling needs will increase the weight and bulkiness of the backpack.
  9. Binders add more bulk to the backpack. Minimize the number of binders used and consolidate homework sheets into one smaller folder or binder.
  10. Lunches can add weight and bulk to the backpack. Consider a light reusable lunch bag and have the child carry it by hand to avoid added load to the back.

Parents, by following these 10 backpack safety tips, you can help minimized the weight and load of the child’s backpack and prevent strain and poor posture from developing.

What Parents Need To Know About Their Child’s Posture

By: Dr. Walter Salubro
Teen Backpack Should I be concerned about my child’s posture?Sit up straight.” “Don’t slouch.” These may have been the words of your mom or dad as you were growing up.

Somehow parents innately know that poor posture is not normal and that poor posture is a problem.  But why are parents correct to be so concerned about their child’s posture?

Before discussing why poor posture is a problem, let’s look at what normal standing posture should be …

Normal Posture

Looking at the body from the front view, these body parts should line up in a normal standing position: mid forehead (midpoint between eyes) lines up midpoint of the upper lip, the midpoint of the chin, the midpoint of the sternum (chest bone) and the midpoint of pelvis).

Looking at the body from the side view, these body parts should line up: the ear is in line with the mid shoulder, the mid hip and the ankle.

What Causes Poor Posture In Children?

Here are some of the most common reasons for the development of poor posture in children:

  • Heavy backpacks
  • Sitting / doing homework
  • Using laptops / computers
  • Video games
  • Watching TV
  • Using handheld devices (mp3 players, cell phones, tablets, gaming devices).
  • Poor sleeping habits (eg. using big fluffy pillows, stomach sleeping position).
  • Prolonged standing positions
  • Carrying handbags / backpack on one shoulder
  • Injuries / accidents

Why Is Poor Posture A Problem?

Poor posture is a problem because can impact the spine and put strain on muscles, bones, discs and nerves.  An optimal spine free of strain and stress is essential to optimal health. Why? Because the spine is responsible for protecting the spinal cord.

The spinal cord is the connection between your brain and the rest of your body parts and organ systems. A shift in posture can cause a shift in the spine, known as a spinal misalignment. A shift in the spine puts pressure on the nervous system (spinal cord and spinal nerves), which could lead to muscle tension, pain, limited mobility and damage to organ systems.  It is essential that the spinal cord and nerves are free of interference. An optimal spine means optimal health.

If you are concerned about how your child’s posture looks, then consider bringing your child to a chiropractor for a postural and spinal check up.  Chiropractors are experts in posture and spinal correction.

Why chiropractic care for kids?

Back To Health Chiropractic Care in Maple, Vaughan provides pediatric chiropractic care.

Young girl playing with paint 300x199 Why chiropractic care for kids?Maple, Vaughan ON - Today, more and more parents are bringing their children to the chiropractor. Children receive tremendous benefit from chiropractic care.

Many times, we will get a call from a parent that goes something like this: “My friend has been bringing her baby with colic to the chiropractor and she said it has helped.  My child has constipation, can chiropractic help?”

Yes, chiropractic can help. We have seen many children with childhood conditions like colic, bedwetting, asthma, allergies and digestive troubles respond well to chiropractic care. However, chiropractic care is not a treatment for these conditions.  The objective of chiropractic care is to find and correct spinal misalignments.  Spinal misalignments can exist in infants and children just a they can exist in adults.

Why should kids get checked for spinal misalignments?

Because a spinal misalignment puts strain and stress on the nervous system.

A healthy nervous system free of strain and stress is essential because the nervous system controls and coordinates every function of the body, including healing and repair.  Therefore, a spinal misalignment can diminish and decrease a child’s ability to express optimal function and optimal health.  Every parent I have ever met wants their child to be fully healthy, expressing their fullest life potential. Chiropractic aims to keep the spine and nervous system optimized and healthy. In this respect, chiropractic works for infants and children just as it does for adults.

How does a infant or child get spinal misalignments?

In children, there are numerous way that spinal misalignments can occur and often time they go undetected because the child will not usually complain of pain like an adult does.

Backpack Safety Tips From Back To Health Chiropractic Centre In Maple, Vaughan.

Children Backpack Safety Chiropractic Maple Vaughan Backpack Safety For School Children: What Parents Need To Know.Maple, ON - Yes, it’s back-to-school time, which makes for a perfect time to talk about backpack safety for kids. Years back when I was in grade school, I don’t recall carrying many books home and certainly never had on overloaded backpack. Today, it seems that backpacks are stuffed with huge binders, textbooks and many other bulky items such as shoes, lunches, pencil cases and electronic devices.

By the time you finish reading this article, you will know what is the impact of your child’s health due to heavy, overloaded backpacks.  You will also be given some key tips to making backpack use more safe for your child so strain and prolonged injury can be prevented.  First, let me put backpack weight in perspective when it comes to carrying backpacks.

One day, a child with a backpack came into the chiropractic office. The child weighed about 60 pounds and was carrying a backpack that weighed about 20 pounds.  When the father was told by the chiropractor that his son’s backpack was way too heavy for his child, the father responded, “But it’s only 20 pounds.”

Now, the father was a 180 pound man, so 20 pounds seemed relatively light to him.  When the father was told, “That 20 pounds for your son  is one third (33%) of his body weight. That would be like you carrying a 60 pound backpack on your back. How would you like to carry 60 pounds on your back?” The father’s answer was obvious, “No way!”.

Backpack Safety Awareness Week At Back To Health Chiropractic Centre September 10-14, 2012

Sometimes we lose perspective on a situation and seems like it’s not big deal.  But when you begin to see the big picture, you will see that it is a big deal.  Heavy backpacks for children can be detrimental, can cause postural distortions and even onset of symptoms.

One study showed that when backpacks weigh 15% or more of the the child’s body weight, it will cause compensating postural changes, such as shifting the head forward.  Even more, at 15% and 20% of the child’s body weight, a backpack will begin to cause discomfort after walking, primarily in the neck region.1

Over time, the continued use of heavy, overloaded backpacks can cause serious postural problems in children even before they get into highschool and college, when the backpacks become even more heavy.

The Top 10 Reasons For Your Child To Have A Chiropractic Check-Up

Saturday, February 11th, 2012

Mom and Child 150x150 The Top 10 Reasons For Your Child To Have A Chiropractic Check UpMaple (Vaughan), Ontario - It is common for people to seek treatment from chiropractors for low back pain, neck pain, headaches or even injuries from work and car accidents.  These are conditions that are mostly seen in adults.   Since a child will not typically complain of low back pain, neck pain or headaches, the parents may never see a reason to get their child checked by a chiropractor for a well exam or a spinal / posture check-up.   However, regardless of any pain or symptom, a child may have spinal misalignments or posture displacements that could be putting strain on their nervous system.  Since the nervous system controls and co-ordinates every function of the body, it’s imperative that the nervous system remains as stress-free as possible for optimal health, optimal growth and optimal body function.

Consider this … spinal misalignments can occur at any time throughout the child’s growth, development and life.

Here are the 10 top reasons for your child to have a chiropractic check-up:

“Chiropractic Works! Adjusting To A Higher Quality Of Life.” – A Book Review

Friday, January 20th, 2012

chiropractic works book Chiropractic Works! Adjusting To A Higher Quality Of Life. A Book Review“Chiropractic Works! Adjusting To A Higher Quality Of Life” is a wonderful book written by Timothy J. Feuling. Mr. Feuling is the vice president of the World Chiropractic Alliance (WCA).  This book is an enjoyable read as it gives you many real life stories of people who have had their life dramatically improved with chiropractic care.

What I really like about this book is that right from book’s introduction, Mr. Feuling says that this book is written with children wellness in mind.  He explains how children, as well as men and women of all ages, have benefited from chiropractic care and there are plenty of stories throughout the book that illustrate this.  Some stories are also written by chiropractors, but most of them are stories written by the patient.

Mr. Feuling also does a great job explaining in a very understandable way the difference between chiropractic care and allopathic medical care.  There is a neat section called “Who’s Who Under Chiropractic Care” where the author lists over 200 celebrities, entertainers and athletes that have received or have been under chiropractic care.
