How Chiropractic Helps with TMJ Treatment

People often ask me if chiropractic can help with TMJ syndrome. The short answer is Yes! Read on to discover how chiropractic helps with TMJ treatment. Also, I have a short video that explain and demonstrates how chiropractic assesses ands treats or corrects for TMJ problems. TMJ stands for temporalmandibular joint.

First, lets discuss what TMJ syndrome or TMJ dysfunction is. 

TMJ syndrome is an issue or problem with the jaw joints.  A person with TMJ problems may have pain or clicking in the jaw joints or may notice that their jaw deviates or shifts to one side when they open their jaw.

What Causes TMJ Syndrome

TMJ problems can be caused from:

  • Trauma to the head and face.
  • Trauma to the upper joints of the neck.
  • Recent dental work.
  • Braces.

The biomechanics of the neck joints at the base of the skull are associated with the jaw biomechanics. As well, the nerves of the upper neck coming from the brain stem relate to the jaws, so if there is a problem nerve function at the upper neck, this can cause jaw issues as well. But, one of the most common reasons for TMJ problems is recent dental work. If you have TMJ problems, you need to ask yourself if you have had recent dental work.

Why is recent dental work relevant? Well, imagine that you are sitting on a dental chair for an hour or an hour and a half and they are doing a procedure on your mouth.  Your mouth is wide open and may be jammed open or blocked open with a blocker. You then come out of that position after an hour and a half and you feel like your mouth is restricted and you can’t even move your jaw. This is one of the mechanisms of injury for the TMJ. If you have pain in the jaw, clicking in the jaw, deviation of the jaw, and some recent trauma or dental work or other trauma to your neck or face region, then these are some of the reasons how the TMJ problems could have happened.

How My Nephews and I Avoided “Text Neck” for at Least One Day

Maple, ON – Yesterday I had the pleasure of taking my nephews out on what I call an Adventure Fun Day with Uncle Walter. We went on a nature walk, observed birds with our binoculars, connected with Mother Nature, and discovered abandoned farm ruins. That was in the morning. In the afternoon we played bowling. And, when we got home, we topped it off with some tree climbing.

These are the types of days I recall when I was a child; spending eight hours a day outdoors, only coming in for lunch and dinner.

Today, too many kids are spending their time indoors, sitting, playing with their handheld devices, like smartphones and tablets.

This problem today has been called “Text Neck”.

Text Neck is a term that describes the effect of constant, progressive flexion (bending forward) of the head and neck due to the excessive use of media devices like smartphones, tablets, and other handheld devices. Yes it can affect adults too but it’s has a more detrimental affect on youngsters because they are still growing and their spines are more flexible, therefore more susceptible to the early development of posture problems.

Bad posture, especially a forward head position, causes a tremendous amount of increased weight and pressure on the neck joints, muscles, and nerves. As well, it tensions the spinal cord, the main pipeline that feeds life from your brain to your body systems. This can lead to a whole array of health issues because the nervous system is the master system that controls all functions, healing, and repair in the body.

Children should be spending more time doing activities that require motion versus spending time sitting with an electronic device. Sitting has also been called the “new smoking” because a prolonged sedentary lifestyle has been linked to increase occurrence of heart disease, obesity, cancer, and other detrimental diseases.

The amazing thing about our Adventure Fun Day yesterday…not once did my nephews ask for their iPad.

The whole point here…one day of avoiding text next is not enough!

As a public awareness message, restrict your child’s use of handheld, electronic media devices to one to two hours A WEEK. Yes, A WEEK. And have them be more engaged in other activities that get’s their body and muscles in motion.

It’s a modern, fast-paced age of technology and social media and the overuse of using handheld devices has skyrocketed. It seems that people of all ages, from infants to seniors are now using portable media players and handheld electronic devices.

If you find yourself in any of these positions when using your personal electronic device, you are putting undue strain, stress and pressure on the muscles, discs and nerves of your spinal column.

Chronic, repetitive overuse of handheld electronic devices in bad postural positions as shown above can lead to an array of pains and discomforts, like muscle strains, neck pain, back pain and headaches. As well, over many years and decades, it can lead to spinal degenerative arthritis.

Now is the time to change your habits when using these devices. And now is the time to teach your children better postural habits when using such devices. 

Be smart. Think about your future health and well-being today. We all use these devices on a daily basis as they have the infiltrated our modern social living. Start today to be mindful of your body positions and posture when using handheld electronic devices. Better choices today for better living tomorrow.
