Chiropractic May Be a Practical Form of Care for Patients with Fibromyalgia

Chiropractor in Vaughan Discusses How Chiropractic May Be a Viable Treatment Option for Patients with Fibromyalgia

Vaughan, ON—According to a 2014 Canadian Community Health Survey by Statistics Canada, 519,146 (1.7%) of Canadians aged 12 and over have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia.1

Fibromyalgia is a condition that is characterized by generalized body pain and an abnormal heightened sensitivity to pain.2 It is also associated with sleep disturbances, memory issues, fatigue, and depression.3

There is no known cause for fibromyalgia. And currently, there are no lab tests or diagnostic imaging studies that can diagnosis fibromyalgia either.

Often times patients who have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia are prescribed pain reliever like Tylenol or Advil. In some cases, antidepressants or anti-seizure drugs may be prescribed. 3

Chiropractic Care for Fibromyalgia

For anyone who has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, chiropractic care should be considered as a viable “treatment” option. I used the word “treatment” loosely here because chiropractic is not about treating any specific condition, such as fibromyalgia. However, many patients with fibromyalgia that I have seen in my office have responded extremely well from chiropractic care. In many of these cases, chiropractic care was their last resort, after medications and other therapies like massage, acupuncture, and physiotherapy.

These Two Things ANGER Me the Most…

Chiropractor in Vaughan Tells How Living with Headaches is Not “Normal

I don’t get angry, usually.

However…

There are two things that I hear that just infuriate me. First, let me tell you about Jane.

I met Jane at one of our community outreach events and she tells me she has had headaches since she was 13 years old.

Her age today is 43. That’s 30 years of suffering with headaches. THIRTY YEARS!

That alone is enough to intrigue me and ask…”Jane, what have you done for your headaches?”

Jane replied, “Well, I have been taking four Advil’s a day for years.”

I said, “I understand, but you still have headaches after all these years.”

And Jane then said something that totally angered me…

She said, “I went to the doctor and the doctor said my headaches are normal and that I have to learn to live with them.”

UGH!

I wasn’t angry with Jane. I was angry with what Jane was led to believe.

I can’t tell you how many times I have heard this.

Since when is it normal to have headaches? Or back pain, or neck pain, etc.

Since when is it normal to be sick or to suffer?

And NO! You don’t have to learn to live with the headache.

Jane was with her 10 year old daughter that day and I asked, “Jane, is it normal for your 10 year old daughter to have headaches?”

She quickly answered, “Of course not!”

“Then why is it normal for you have headaches?”

That’s when she paused.

I can see the gears turning in her brain as she was thinking about my question.

“I guess my headaches are not normal”, she says.

That’s right.

Fortunately for Jane, she started chiropractic care for her headaches.

Within 2 months, her headaches decreased by 50%. Within 6 months she was off all her Advil medication. Today, Jane is a happy woman totally free of headaches.

Let me ask you then?

If Jane didn’t solve her headaches today with chiropractic, where would she be in 30 years when she’s 73?

I don’t want to picture the answer to that question.

Our mission is to help sick and suffering people get well so the can live a long-lasting, healthy, and happy life.

Jane is now healthier, happier, is free of suffering, and on her way to a long-lasting quality of life.

How to Prevent Arthritis with Chiropractic

Chiropractor in Vaughan Sheds Light on Arthritis, the Main Cause, and How Chiropractic Helps with Prevention

Maple, ON—In conclusion of Restricted Mobility Awareness Month, I want to share with you an integral research study about arthritis.

Research has shown that a joint that has been immobilized (not moving well or has restricted joint mobility), it will begin to show irreversible degeneration (joint damage) within two (2) weeks.1

That’s right! Two (2) weeks.

How does this related to chiropractic?

A misalignment of the spine (vertebral subluxation) is a spinal joint that has restriction mobility. Which means that when spinal misalignments (subluxations) are not corrected immediately, that spinal joint will begin to have irreversible joint damage (degenerative joint disease).

This damage occurs at the cartilage area of the joint. It starts with cellular damage on the joint surface, which doesn’t show up on x-rays yet. It takes years and years of progressive damage to show up on x-rays.

But a spinal joint that has been restricted (subluxated) is on it’s way to forming arthritis unless it’s corrected with a specific, scientific chiropractic adjustment.

To prevent arthritis from developing, to prevent spinal damage from progressing, and to prevent overall restricted mobility, chiropractic is absolutely essential and required.

Why? Because chiropractic is the only profession that is dedicated to the correction of restricted joint mobility (spinal misalignments, aka subluxations).

If you are under regular chiropractic care, keep it up. You are investing in your future health and ultimate potential as a human being. Keep up with your weekly adjustments.

If you are on a supportive maintenance schedule of care, keep up weekly, or at second best, every 2 weeks because spinal misalignment that persist longer than 2 weeks will begin to have irreversible joint damage.

If you are not under chiropractic care at this time, when is now a good time to get a check up or an update exam? Call us and we can help get you back on track.

Chiropractic is a lifestyle. It’s more than just a treatment for a condition. It’s about optimizing your life by keeping your spine protected and by optimizing your nervous system.

If you know anyone that has restricted mobility, tell them about chiropractic and tell them about our office.

Together, we can make a huge difference in their quality of life.

Arthritis is NOT the problem?

How a Chiropractor in Vaughan Helps People with Arthritis and Restricted Mobility

Let me tell you about Mr. Mike, who is 68 years old and has trouble walking.

Mr. Mike comes into our office and tells me he has back pain, tingling in his right leg, and has trouble walking.

Here’s the kicker. He says, “My family doctor told me a year ago I have arthritis.”

I hear this so many times. Patients tell me often, “I already know I have arthritis.”

What Mr. Mike has is osteoarthritis, also called degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, which is a wear-and-tear type of arthritis.

Here’s my issue when people tell me they already know they have arthritis.

Arthritis is Not the Problem!

I’m not saying that arthritis does not cause pain, discomfort, lack of mobility, and suffering, because it does.

What I’m saying is this…Arthritis is an indication of an underlying problem that has already existed for at for at least the past 20 years.

How Chiropractic Helps with TMJ Treatment

Chiropractor in Vaughan Demonstrates and Explains How Chiropractic Treats for TMJ Syndrome

TMJ Treatment Chiropractor in VaughanMaple, ON—Jaw pain? Clicking in the jaw? Having trouble chewing hard foods like apples and nuts. Perhaps you have a TMJ problem.

People often ask me if chiropractic can help with TMJ syndrome. The short answer is Yes! Read on to discover how chiropractic helps with TMJ treatment. Also, I have a short video that explain and demonstrates how chiropractic assesses ands treats or corrects for TMJ problems. TMJ stands for temporalmandibular joint.

First, lets discuss what TMJ syndrome or TMJ dysfunction is.

TMJ syndrome is an issue or problem with the jaw joints.  A person with TMJ problems may have pain or clicking in the jaw joints or may notice that their jaw deviates or shifts to one side when they open their jaw.

What Causes TMJ Syndrome

TMJ problems can be caused from:

  • Trauma to the head and face.
  • Trauma to the upper joints of the neck.
  • Recent dental work.
  • Braces.

Watch Video for Demonstration of a Chiropractic TMJ Exam

The biomechanics of the neck joints at the base of the skull are associated with the jaw biomechanics. As well, the nerves of the upper neck coming from the brain stem relate to the jaws, so if there is a problem nerve function at the upper neck, this can cause jaw issues as well. But, one of the most common reasons for TMJ problems is recent dental work. If you have TMJ problems, you need to ask yourself if you have had recent dental work.

Why is recent dental work relevant? Well, imagine that you are sitting on a dental chair for an hour or an hour and a half and they are doing a procedure on your mouth.  Your mouth is wide open and may be jammed open or blocked open with a blocker. You then come out of that position after an hour and a half and you feel like your mouth is restricted and you can’t even move your jaw. This is one of the mechanisms of injury for the TMJ. If you have pain in the jaw, clicking in the jaw, deviation of the jaw, and some recent trauma or dental work or other trauma to your neck or face region, then these are some of the reasons how the TMJ problems could have happened.

I Almost Cried When I Visited A Local Nursing Home. Here’s Why…

Chiropractic Office in Vaughan to Focus on Helping People with Restricted Mobility in May

A recent visit to a local nursing home humbled me.

I will tell you about it but first I want to remind you how grateful I am.

I recall about nine years ago when I ran my first 10k race. I hardly trained for it and it was going to run a 10km distance for the first time. By the time I was half way through, my legs felt so heavy and my muscles were in excruciating pain. Only one thing got me through the finish line.

Gratitude!

That’s right. I had a overwhelming sense of gratitude. Through all the pain, the sweat, and the fatigue, I kept on saying to myself, “I’m so grateful for my legs. I’m am so grateful for my muscles. I’m so grateful for my strength”.

That’s the only way I pulled through. I crossed the finish line.

Why do I tell you this story?

Well, I tell you because if you are able to walk and get around on your own two feet and legs, then you should be grateful too.

You see, there are many people in our society, maybe even people you know personally, that have a restriction with their mobility and require the use of a cane, a walker, or a wheel chair.

If you don’t know of any personally, then visit a local nursing home and you will see how common this is.

Recently, I went to visit a family friend in a nursing home with my wife.  After we were done with our visit, we were waiting for the elevator. About 50 feet away from us was a sweet elderly woman in a wheel chair.

But something seemed off.

She then starting yelling but because she spoke a language that was foreign to me, I didn’t understand what she was saying.

She kept on yelling. I realized it was more of a distress call and that she was trying to get my attention.

I walked over to her. Her frailty and weakness was really noticeable. I then saw that she was slowly slipping off her wheel chair.

So I immediately helped her up into a seated position.

What she did next melted my heart.

She tilted her head down, put her face in one hand, and started to cry. Tears were pouring down her cheeks. I looked at her, held her hand and told her, “It’s okay”.

It suddenly occurred to me how helpless she must have felt and how she probably wished she had the strength to help and support herself.

What would she give to be able to walk again? What would that be worth to her? There’s no amount of money that can equate to this basic need and value as a human being.

This is why we should all be grateful for our ability to walk and get around with our own legs and our strength.

But there are far to many people who have restriction with their mobility and depend on external devices likes a cane, a walker, or a wheel chair.

And this is why at Back To Health Chiropractic Centre, we are honouring Restricted  Mobility Awareness.

That’s right, May is Restricted Mobility Awareness Month.

Our aim this month is to focus on reaching out and helping people with restricted mobility; anybody with a cane, walker, or wheel chair.

How can we help? With chiropractic care. Chiropractic can help improve power to muscles, increase mobility of restricted joints in the spine, hip, and knees, and it can help increase strength.

If you know of anyone in your circle of family and friends who is currently using a cane, a walker, or a wheel chair, then refer them for a chiropractic check up today. They certainly can use it.

If they need encouragement or reasurrance, then bring them to our office yourself.

And, if they want the check up but can’t get to our office, then I will do my best to get to them with a home visit.

Remember the story of the elderly lady above.

Let’s start seeing more smiles on people’s faces and not tears. Together, we can make this happen through chiropractic.

Call our office today at (905) 303-1009 to discover how chiropractic can help with restricted mobility.

Here are the top 10 key benefits of massage therapy:

1. Tension release. Deep tissue massage offered by a registered massage therapy can really work out old kinks and tight muscles. Chronic muscle tightness can develop from a variety of reasons, such as past traumas or injuries or constant daily repetitive strains. If you are feeling tightness in your shoulder, neck or back muscles, you will find that the deep tissue techniques offered by a massage therapist can really begin to melt away all that discomfort and tension.

2. Relaxation. With the levels of stress and overwhelm that most people feel today, a nice relaxing massage might just be the answer you are looking for. Massage offers a therapeutic touch that makes this healing art unique. It is relaxing, soothing, and comforting. When your stress hits the ceiling in your life, it’s time to break it down with a relaxing massage.

3. Tissue healing. Massage therapy can break down scar tissue and connective tissue adhesions that develop from chronic and sub-acute conditions. This will help accelerate healing in a stubborn injury.

4. Circulation. Muscle tightness can create tension on the small blood vessels that feed nutrients and oxygen to the local tissues. When muscle tightness is released and minimized with a therapeutic massage, blood circulation can in the surrounding tissues can increase.

5. Detox and cleansing. The more blood circulation the there is, the more toxins will be removed from your body. This can be a great hidden benefit of massage therapy. Another unique form of massage therapy can specifically target the lymaphatic vessels of the body which will create a deeper cleansing and detoxing effect. This form of massage therapy is called lymphatic massage. Lymphatic massage involves lightly milking and pressing along the lymphatic chain in various parts of the body, like the neck, which can really help move lymphatic sludge which has dangerously accumulated over the years.

6.  Improves posture. Bad posture can develop when muscles get tight and tense, especially over a span of many years. Massage therapy can directly focus on reducing tightness and tension on postural muscles which can lead to improved posture.

7. Increases energy. When you are stressed and feel tension in your body and muscles, it can be very draining and fatiguing by the end of the day. A relaxing and therapeutic massage will improve your energy levels because it helps to eliminate that uncomfortable tightness and tension on your back, neck, shoulders, and muscles.

8. Improves sleeping. Sometimes it’s just so challenging to get a good nights sleep or to find yourself in a comfortable sleeping position. This may be due to the tremendous amount of muscle tension, tightness, stress, and pain that you carry. When you release these tight muscles and reduce the tension on your body with massage therapy, you will find you will begin fall asleep easier and wake up in the morning feeling refreshed.

9. Helps treat conditions like back pain, neck pain, migraine, headaches, leg pain, shoulder pain, and arm pain. These are very common conditions and reasons that bring someone to a massage therapist. Often times massage therapy can help people suffering of these conditions cope with their condition better as they move along their road to recovery.

10. It can be a nice treat to yourself. Many people treat themselves with a nice, relaxing, and therapeutic massage. Let’s face it, massages feel great and help you feel better. Who doesn’t want that? So next time you feel overworked, overwhelmed, stressed, and under appreciated, treat yourself and your aching body to a nice, therapeutic, relaxing, and soothing massage.
